For the 2024-25 licensure year, renewal will be available beginning the week of January 15, 2024.

The administrative deadline for licensure renewal is March 1. This deadline provides time in advance of the licence expiry date for the College to review and process your application. The licence expiry date of March 31 remains unchanged. Applications submitted after March 1 will be subject to a late fee ($50 + HST).  The March 1 deadline does not apply to registrants renewing a non-practicing membership.

You and your employer can confirm the status of your licence and/or membership by using the College’s Member Search feature. This list is current and contains your name, licence number, initial registration date, licence/membership effective date and expiry date. This balances the need for public awareness with the registrant’s right to privacy. It’s your responsibility to confirm licensure status prior to commencing practise.

Yes. The RN Regulations stipulate it is a condition of a licence that all RNs and NPs must have professional liability protection to practice nursing in NL. The Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) is the provider for professional liability protection as approved by Council.

CNPS also offers an optional feature “CNPS Supplementary Protection”. For an additional fee ($130 (plus tax)), members have the option to register for CNPS Supplementary Protection at the time of their licence renewal or any time during the licensure year. The Supplementary Protection program will now run on a calendar year and features automatic renewal to avoid a gap in protection. The Supplementary Protection program extends the scope of CNPS assistance to include eligibility for legal assistance with regulatory matters regarding your nursing care and disciplinary and fitness to practice hearings. For more information contact the CNPS (www.cnps.ca/complaints).

In previous years, registrants applied to the CNPS Supplementary Protection program with an eligibility period of April 1 – March 30. New for 2024-25 renewal, the program eligibility period will be adjusted to January 1-December 31, to align with other jurisdictions. As such, the renewal fee will be adjusted to $105 plus HST to reflect the period of April 1-December 31, 2024.The CNPS Supplementary Protection also now features automatic renewal to avoid a gap in protection, which will occur in fall 2024 for 2025 at the full annual rate. The full annual fee of the Supplementary Protection program is $140 plus HST.

Methods of payment accepted include Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, online debit (not all banks offer this option), Visa debit, MasterCard debit, Discover Card, Diner’s Club International, employer payroll deduction or CRNNL pre-authorized payment. Please note that prepaid credit cards may not be accepted.

Employers who offer payroll deduction will forward to the College the names and fees (RN & NP: $412.47) of those registrants for whom they have deducted the full licensure fee before the licensure/membership renewal site opens. If the College has received your licensure fee from your employer, you will be notified on the payment page of the renewal site. If not, you will be required to pay online.

The College also has a pre-authorized payment plan for those registrants who wish to have their renewal fee deducted directly from their bank account. Contact the College for more information on this program.

If you held registration/licence in another province/territory/country within the last 12 months you must report this information on your renewal application. The College may be able to verify your licensure status online through the identified nursing regulatory body for that jurisdiction. If licensure status cannot be verified online, or you have declared disciplinary action in that jurisdiction you will need to request a verification of registration document. Click here for the request form that you will need to provide to the nursing regulatory body in that jurisdiction(s). The College will notify you by email if you are required to provide a verification of registration.

To renew a practicing RN licence, a registrant must have practised for a minimum of 1,125 hours in the last five years or 450 hours in the last two years.

To renew a practicing NP licence, a registrant must have practised as an NP for a minimum of 900 hours over the last three years.

Registrants who no longer meet the currency of practice hours requirement may be eligible for the College’s Supervised Practice Experience Partnership Program (SPEPP), an employment focused program available to eligible registrants to regain their eligibility for RN or NP licensure. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Beginning with 2024-25 licensure renewal the College is moving to a self-report model for nursing practice hours. The College has deemed this current licensure year/renewal period (2024-25) to be a “transitionary year.” RNs and NPs will be permitted to simply provide the College with an estimation of their practice hours, for the reporting period (April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024), via a declaration on their renewal application.

A new Fact Sheet – Self-reporting Registered Nurse (RN) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) Practice hours has been developed. This fact sheet has information on how to calculate & report hours, what is eligible to be counted as practice hours, and other FAQs.

As of April 1st, 2024, RNs and NPs should keep a record of their practice hours in whichever manner best suits them for future reporting.

ALL RNs/NPs are required to log your required number of learning activity hours and do your summative evaluation before applying for a practicing licence. Failure to do so will result in you not being able to renew your licence to practice. To log your activities and evaluation visit the ‘My Learning’ section of the College’s Member Portal. Learn more about CCP by visiting this page.

It is a professional obligation to continue learning throughout the licensure year, and you can still log your learning activities up to March 31 of the licensure year. However, licensure renewal applications must be completed by the administrative deadline of March 1st to avoid incurring a late fee.

If a registrant practices after March 31 without a current nursing licence, a late fee ($50+HST) will apply. All RNs and NPs who actively practise without a valid interim or practicing licence shall be subject to an Unauthorized Practice fee of $100/shift worked with a maximum fee of three times the regular licensure cost and is subject to discipline where the period of practice exceeds 3 shifts from and including the 1st shift.

When the College has finalized the processing of your licence your name will display to the online member search confirming your practicing licence has been processed and issued. You can also verify your licensure status through the Member Portal; see ‘Active Permit’ or ‘Download Registration’ section. It is your responsibility to confirm your licensure status prior to commencing practice.

Registrants can retrieve receipts for the current and previous licensure years at no charge through the Member Portal.
