Continuing Competency

About the New Program

Welcome to the College’s new Continuing Competency Program (CCP). The new CCP has six steps that registered nurses and nurse practitioners complete prior to licensure renewal. The first two steps are informal, reflective exercises and the remaining four steps are logged in My learning in the Alinity member portal. The new program is designed to recognize the continuous learning that RNs and NPs engage in their everyday work environment. The new CCP has a number of resources developed to assist the RN or NP to navigate how to complete the six steps.

The College recognizes that the nature of an RNs or NPs work is one that involves continuous learning. RNs and NPs should get credit for this continuous learning. Under the new program, learning related to your nursing practice or practice setting is considered approved learning!

  • Under the previous system, RNs/NPs often did not capture the discussions/learning on the job. This new CCP is meant to log all the learning that you participate in.
  • RNs/NPs no longer have to have learning activities verified.
  • You log your learning activities online in My learning located under the Alinity Member Portal.
  • There is no longer any distinction between formal and self-directed learning.
  • You can count any learning that you engage, related to your professional practice or practice setting.
  • There are no longer any paper forms. You log all your learning activities online under My learning in Alinity.
  • Completing a self-assessment and a learning plan are informal reflective exercises.
  • The number of hours required for CCP, reflective of the value of continuous learning for safe and competent client care, is now set at 24 for the licensure year (April 1st to March 31st) as all learning can now be submitted.

With the New CCP, RNs and NPs can log all learning activities related to their practice. Some of the examples include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Attending College education sessions (Tuesday teleconference)
  • Looking up a drug in the e-CPS
  • Speaking with clinical educators on new procedures
  • Reviewing new policies
  • Attending rounds
  • Reviewing College Documents
  • Completing a webinar or online course
  • Conducting literature reviews
  • Preparing a research proposal
  • Developing policy related to your practice
  • Reviewing best practices
  • Completing course outlines
  • Taking part in management courses (e.g., LEADs/budgeting)
  • Reading The College Connection, Regulation Matters, or a journal article, etc.

Learning activities must be completed annually from April 1st to March 31st

The most significant change to CCP is based around the ability to log everyday learning. Based on the CCP evaluation findings report, an analysis of other regulated professions and cross-jurisdictional scans, and feedback from RNs and NPs in Newfoundland and Labrador, 24 hours a year (hours per month) was deemed appropriate.

RNs and NPs returning from extended leave must be up to date and current with their CCP prior to practicing. Additional information can be found on this by reviewing the CCP Framework and CCP Guide documents.

Yes, Education outside of a practice setting which related to your practice as a RN/NP can be logged as CCP.

No. The Continuing Competency Program is required under law and is established to ensure that the public receives safe and competent care. The new system is designed to be efficient and allow you to log learning at any point in the licensure year.

When you log into the Alinity Member Portal (which you use to renew your licence each year) you click on the link titled My learning and can then log your learning.

The College has produced a step-by-step guide on how to complete the new CCP and this document can be found by clicking here.
